Cast of Characters
Janie- Janie is the protagonist in this story. Throughout the book, she tells her friend about her childhood, and her three marriages.
Pheoby- She is Janie’s best friend from Eatonville, who listens as Janie tells her story, and who gives Janie advice after the death of Jody.
Sam Watson- He is Pheoby’s husband. He enjoys sitting on the store porch and gossiping about the town.
Mrs. Washburn- She is the white woman who employed Janie’s grandmother, and allowed both Janie and her grandmother to live in her backyard.
Nanny- She is Janie’s grandmother. She raised Janie, until she was 16, and then she forced her to marry Logan Killicks.
Logan Killicks- He was Janie’s first husband. In the beginning of the marriage, he treated her well, but then he began to complain, and treat her poorly.
Joe Starks (Jody)- He was Janie’s second husband. He swept her off her feet with his sweet-talking, and he provided for all of her physical needs, but he oppressed her by keeping her separate from all of the regular town folks in Eatonville, where he was mayor.
Hezekiah Potts- He is a delivery boy at the Stark’s store who is especially helpful to Janie after Joe’s death.
Matt Bonner- He is a citizen of Eatonville who owned a particularly stubborn mule, which Joe bought from him and set free.
Tea Cake- He is Janie’s final husband. Though he is much younger and less well off than her previous husbands, Janie and Tea Cake are truly in love.
Nunkie- She is a chunky, young girl who has a crush on Tea Cake. For a while Janie is jealous of her until Tea Cake reassures Janie that he loves her, and only her.
Mrs. Turner- She is a woman who lives on the muck. She is prejudice against darker-skinned black people and tries to set Janie up with her brother.
Motor Boat- He is another resident of the muck who is with Janie and Tea Cake when the hurricane hits.
